Grief Counseling:

Hudson Valley Hospice

Tailored programs and services include individual counseling, telephone support, workshops, and support groups. Hudson Valley Hospice also maintains a library of articles, pamphlets, and books that focus on different aspects of grief and loss. Your loved one need not have been served by Hospice to participate.

The Compassionate Friends

This organization provides grief support to family members who have had a child die (at any age from any cause) and for helpers who are supporting those who have gone through this experience. Contact the National Office for a customized packet of bereavement materials and connect with the nearest chapter, which is located in Catskill, NY.

Support Groups:

Death Cafe

Circle of Friends for the Dying invites you to come together and talk about death. Have some coffee or tea and a piece of cake, and in a relaxed safe environment increase your awareness of attitudes about dying and death with a view towards living the best life possible. There is no charge to attend, registration is not required, and all are welcome. Death Cafe meets monthly in various locations throughout Ulster County. Circle of Friends for the Dying’s mission is to bring compassionate, competent end-of-life care to the dying and their families by providing a home and a circle of support.

Children’s Bereavement Support Group

Sponsored by Hospice, Inc., this group is for school-age children who have lost family members and are experiencing normal grief. This group is designed to help children address the tasks of grief in a supportive, therapeutic setting with other children who share their experience. They do this by participating in age-appropriate activities including music, movement, games, arts and crafts, writing, and grief education through literature and storytelling.

Survivors of Suicide Loss Support Group

This peer led group, sponsored by The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, provides a safe space where survivors of suicide loss can share their experiences and support each other. Some survivors attend a support group immediately, some wait for years, others attend for a year or two and then go only occasionally – on anniversaries, holidays, or particularly difficult days.

Suicide Support Group

This group is for anyone who has lost someone to suicide. We help each other throughout the process and the pain, whether it has been 1 month or 10 years ago. This peer led group, sponsored by The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, provides a safe space where survivors of suicide loss can share their experiences and support each other.

GRASP (Grief Recovery After a Substance Passing)

Grasp was founded to help provide sources of help, compassion and most of all, understanding for families or individuals who have had a loved one die as a result of a substance abuse or addiction. Pre registration is required. There is no charge for GRASP groups.

Bereavement Support for Grieving Families

The Mid Hudson Chapter is part of the Bereaved Parents of the USA. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. This group is a self-help support group for parents and families who are learning to cope with their grief after the death of a child of any age. There is no registration or fee required to join our group.
